How Six Years of Searching for Answers Led to Saving Four Lives: Olivia Glick’s Nutcracker Kidney Donation Story

At 18 years old, I never imagined that chronic pain would shape the next six years of my life—or that it would eventually lead me to save four others.

My symptoms began during my freshman year of college. Over the course of several years, I saw countless specialists, received multiple misdiagnoses, and underwent two surgeries that failed to address the underlying cause. Eventually, the pain became so debilitating that I transferred to a university closer to home so I could be near my family while continuing to search for answers.

Six years after my symptoms first began, I was diagnosed with Nutcracker Syndrome, a rare vascular condition caused by compression of the left renal vein.

After meeting with the transplant team at the University of Wisconsin, I learned that donating my healthy left kidney offered the best chance to relieve my symptoms while also providing a life-saving gift to someone else. Following extensive evaluations, I moved forward with living kidney donation.

What began as surgery to treat my rare condition became an opportunity to change multiple lives. My donation became part of an eight-person kidney exchange chain that resulted in four kidney transplants, creating a ripple effect that changed multiple lives. The surgery not only relieved the pain caused by Nutcracker Syndrome but also gave four other people a second chance at life.

Looking back, I never could have imagined where my journey would lead. What began as the most challenging chapter of my life became the most meaningful. I am proud to be part of the living donor community.

By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness of Nutcracker Syndrome, a condition that often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because many healthcare providers may never encounter it. I hope my experience encourages others living with unexplained symptoms to continue asking questions, seeking answers, and trusting what they know about their own bodies. Most of all, I hope my story reminds others that even life’s greatest challenges can lead to purpose in ways they never expected.
