My Kidney Donation Story: Andrew Workmon

Andrew Workmon

One of my coworkers donated a kidney to a lifelong friend last year. I thought that was awesome, but at the time it just wasn’t on my radar to donate myself.

Then in October 2024, during a leadership summit, our Head of Human Capital shared all the problems she was going through due to kidney failure and asked for prayers.

That’s when I first started seriously thinking about it. I prayed about it and immediately felt God call me to do it. After that, there was no question: I was going to go as far as I could go. I wanted to do more than just offer her comfort and prayers: I wanted to actively do something to be God’s hands and feet.

Amazingly, we were a blood type match. That opened the door to more testing. But then came the next challenge: I needed to lose a significant amount of weight before they’d even consider me for donation.

Once again, I felt God’s calling. I committed. Cut sugar, dropped my calorie and carb intake, and stayed disciplined. In just four months, I had lost 40 pounds and was approved for a full workup at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

Still, part of me hoped God would close the door. I prayed, asking Him to stop the process if it wasn’t His will. But He didn’t. Instead, I received confirmation that not only was I a perfect match, I was in great health and fully approved to donate.

We had the surgery on April 15, 2025, and both of us are doing great. Within a month, I was pretty much fully recovered. It was much faster than I had expected, although I did start doing a little bit more than I was supposed to before my body was ready. It was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be, and I was able to get back to normal life very quickly.

I’m sharing my story because of the desperate need for more living kidney donors. In the U.S. alone, more than 90,000 people are currently waiting for a kidney transplant, but only about 6,000 living kidney donations happen each year. That means tens of thousands wait years, or never receive one at all.

If you’ve ever considered it, I urge you to pray about becoming a living donor. Or at the very least, register to donate if you feel ready. You never know the impact your decision could have—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Family is his highest priority—just behind his relationship with Christ. He cherishes time with his wife and children, whether it’s cheering on his sons at baseball games or planning special date nights with his daughters. At the end of the day, faith, family, and purpose are what keep him grounded. He is thankful for the opportunity to have donated to his co-worker and prays their story will inspire others to do the same.
