The Donation Process
Thinking about becoming a living donor? The National Kidney Registry (NKR) makes the process as convenient, safe, and stress-free as possible. Here are the steps you’ll go through.
- Register with the NKR: Begin by completing a brief online medical screening. If you’re a potential match, you’ll be connected with a transplant center of your choice.
- Undergo Medical Evaluation: Becoming a living donor involves a thorough medical evaluation to ensure that it’s safe for both the donor and the recipient. You’ll receive comprehensive testing—including blood work, imaging, and consultations—to ensure you’re a healthy candidate for donation. You will not be charged for any pre-workup labs related to your donation. Routine screenings like mammograms or colonoscopies may also be required.
- Schedule Surgery: Once approved, you’ll coordinate with your transplant center to select a convenient surgery date. The procedure typically lasts 2–3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
- Recover and Resume Life: Most donors leave the hospital within a few days and return to normal activities in a few weeks. Living with one kidney is safe, and donors can lead full, healthy lives.
